Today, Official Oricon News released an article talking about the Best-selling artists in the Oricon History. B'z who just released the new album "C'mon" has reached to the 1st place of the ranking.
Ayu is mentioned on the article as the third Best-selling artist with 49.577 million units sold overall.

Hamasaki Ayumi sets new Oricon record with 4 albums in the top 10
J-pop superstar Hamasaki Ayumi has set a new record by landing 4 albums in the top 10 of this week’s Oricon Weekly Charts!
The 4 remix albums (“ayu-mi-x 7 presents ayu-ro mix 4“, “ayu-mi-x 7 -version Acoustic Orchestra“, “ayu-mi-x 7 presents ayu trance 4“, and “ayu-mi-x 7 version HOUSE-“) were all released on April 20th and took the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th spots on this week’s Oricon Weekly Album Ranking.
The previous record for having the most simultaneous albums in the top 10 was held jointly by TMN, L’Arc~en~Ciel, and Hamasaki herself, with 3 albums each. Hamasaki also set a record in the Oricon Music DVD Ranking this week, by being the first female artist to take the 1st and 2nd position at the same time.
The singer commented, “I feel very honored to be able to update another record like this. This is all thanks to the support of fans. The remixes this time is one or two flavors different from the original, so I will be happy if more people can enjoy them. Also, the DVDs were sort of like a compilation of all the lives I’ve had, so I hope people can enjoy listening to and watching them both.”

According to Oricon’s Weekly DVD ranking for May 9th, pop queen Hamasaki Ayumi has officially become the female artist with the highest music DVD sales in Japan!
The previous record was held by Morning Musume, who has sold approximately 2.303 million DVDs since their live concert DVD “Morning Musume Memory Seishun no Hikari” was released in 1999.
Hamasaki’s most recent music DVDs “A 50 SINGLES ~LIVE SELECTION~” and “ayumi hamasaki Rock’ n’ Roll Circus Tour FINAL ~7days Special~” – which sold nine thousand and six thousand units respectively – have pushed her total sales to 2.313 million units, surpassing Morning Musume’s record by ten thousand units.
Ayu broke other Oricon records just last week when her four remix albums charted in the top ten on the Oricon album charts, making her the artist with the most albums to rank in the top ten simultaneously. She also became the first female artist to hold the top two positions on the music DVD ranking when her two music DVDs were released on April 20th.

[News] 18.03.2011 Ayumi Hamasaki & Koda Kumi Leave Messages For Japan
Ayumi Hamasaki & Koda Kumi leave messages for Japan
Avex artists Hamasaki Ayumi and Koda Kumi have both released messages regarding last week’s Tohoku earthquake. Also, on March 17th, Hamasaki Ayumi, in collaboration with ViVi, will start selling charity T-shirts through Avex’s mu-mo shop.
Ayumi sends out her deepest sympathies to the victims of the Tohoku earthquake, and she is thankful that everyone is being strong and working together. Because of that attitude, Japan has a bright future.
Koda Kumi also sends her deepest sympathies to the victims, and although things are strenous, she believes that even if there is fear and anxiety, it’s a battle that they (the Japanese) have to bear and go through. “It’s an unfortunate reality that really wrings the heart,” said Kumi, and that, “Even though it happened, none of us are alone, so everything will be OK.”
For her, she believes that each and every one of them are connected through their hearts, and that everybody needs to keep fighting. She says even right now, family, friends, that special someone, everyone is holding hands to save each other. Also, the only thing she can do right now is sing and hope it helps heal some of the anxiety and sadness.
“I hope that my songs reach everyone,” she said. “So that it brings a smile to everyone’s hearts.”

[Oricon] 11.12.2010 Ayu Ranks No. 7th In Total Sales For 2010
Values are in millions of yen.
Ayu sold about 2.83 billion yen worth of CDs/DVDs this year. 678 million yen came from singles, 1.3 billion yen from albums, and 866 million yen from live DVD sales.
Ayu placed 7th for the year. Arashi was 1st with a whopping 16.8 billion yen in sales! I think she counts as the top solo female artist if Ikimonogakari is counted as a female-led band. Not sure. Pretty impressive considering she's been around the longest out of most of these acts

[Article] 10.11.2010 Oricon Current Trends: Decline Of The Solo Artist?
It's not really news/article about Ayu but it does mention about Ayu and we should learn that it's not only Ayu whose sales become declining, but solo artists in general.
Current trends: Decline of the solo artist?
If you’ve recently been following Oricon and the general trends on the Japanese music scene, you’ll have noticed two things. One is the Hallyu wave (Korean Wave) and the recent success of groups such as KARA and Shoujo Jidai. The other is the trend of idol groups over solo artists with the explosion in AKB48’s popularity, Perfume’s utter domination of the technopop scene. Tohoshinki’s dominance in the early part of 2010. Not to mention mega group Arashi – or other Johnny’s groups such as Kanjani8 and NEWS – having a hit on their hands with every single release.
What does this exactly mean for the solo artist in Japan? In the past five to six years alone, we’ve seen the dramatic decline of once mega popular artists such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Ai Otsuka, as well as many others in their league. Now while this isn’t particularly a singling out of these artists, there is something to be said about the way their popularity is now as compared to these idol groups. And it’s not just Ayumi Hamasaki or Ai Otsuka – it’s about solo artists in general. Just take a look at Oricon’s yearly single charts so far. While the year isn’t over just yet, it’s shocking for most to see that only 3 solo artists have been able to crack the top 20: Fuyumi Sakamoto at #12, Masaharu Fukuyama at #17 and #19 respectively, and finally Kiyoshi Hikawa at #20.
However, all is not lost for the solo artist as they’ve been fairing much better on album charts. While this group domination is apparent in the singles charts, the album chart has quite a few successful solo acts to boast: Kana Nishino currently holds the best-selling female solo album this year at #2, with Namie Amuro at #4, and other entries such as Kaela Kimura, Hideaki Tokunaga, Lady GaGa, JUJU, Koda Kumi, Ayumi Hamasaki, YUI, and Superfly, all within the top 20.
As for the first trend, it will definitely be interesting to follow this into 2011 with the intentions of K-pop groups such as 2PM, 2NE1, T-ara, and BEAST to debut in Japan.

[Article] 27.09.2010 Ayu Is Tied For An ORICON Record
Singer, Hamasaki Ayumi released her 49th single “crossroad” on the 22nd. She sold 74,000 copies during the first week and entered the ORICON weekly chart (10/4) in first place. She has had 24 consecutive first place singles since “Free & Easy” (released April 2002) and has 36 first place works overall. Matsuda Seiko is the current record holder and also has 24 consecutive first place possessions, which makes Ayumi tied with her.
